Frequently asked questions about iögo 0% with stevia extract

  • Tell me more about the stevia extract found in the new IÖGO 0% yogurts?

Stevia extract is a calorie-free sweetener from 100% natural origin. It is 200 to 300 times sweeter than white sugar. When used in very small quantities, stevia extract can replace some of the sugar generally used in food products.

Known as the "sweet herb," stevia is a native plant of Paraguay, South America. Over the centuries, people have traditionally grown, harvested and used the leaves of this plant to naturally sweeten their herbal teas and foods.

    • Botanical name: Stevia rebaudiana
    • Family: Asteraceae (same botanical family as chicory, thistles, and daisies.)
    • Origin: Northern part of South America (Brazil and Paraguay)
  • Why IÖGO 0% with stevia extract contains 15 calories more than the rest of the 0% line?

As opposed to the rest of the 0% line, IÖGO 0% with stevia extract contains cane sugar. Therefore, the additional 15 calories come from the carbohydrates in the cane sugar.

  • Why did you add cane sugar to the recipe?

Although sweet, stevia extract on its own can leave a slightly bitter taste. To make it more enjoyable, we added a small amount of cane sugar to the recipe.

  • What flavours and sizes does this product come in?

IÖGO 0% with stevia extract offers seven flavours : raspberry, vanilla, strawberry, pear, cherry, blueberry and mango-passion fruit, in 16x100g or 650g format.
  • Can diabetics eat those products?

Diabetics can include IÖGO 0% with stevia extract in their diet. However, if you are diabetic, it is recommended that you talk to your doctor or nutritionist first, since this product also contains a small amount of cane sugar.
  • How is stevia extract produced?

The process to manufacture stevia extract is the same as for natural flavours. The leaves of the stevia plant are dried, then infused and the resulting liquid undergoes an extraction process to remove the steviol glycosides. The steviol glycosides are then purified with filtering, crystallization and separation techniques.

  • Does this extract pose health risks?

No. Before stevia extract was approved as a food additive, Health Canada conducted a safety assessment and concluded that there were no health or safety concerns associated with the use of stevia extract. Research has demonstrated that steviol glycosides, or the sweet compounds contained in stevia extract, do not accumulate in the body and that ingesting a single large dose or a lower dose over a long period has no toxic effect.

  • Why are you launching a yogurt with stevia extract now?

The use of stevia extract in food products was approved in 2008 in the United States by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and in 2009 in France by the AFSSA (Agence française de sécurité sanitaire des aliments). In November 2012, Health Canada approved the use of this product in Canada. We’re proud to say that IÖGO 0% with stevia extract is the first Canadian yogurt on the market to contain this sweetener from 100% natural origin.
